Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to chill it.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 2 oz blended Scotch, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice (enough to reach near the top). Stir gently but thoroughly for 30–45 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (mix becomes slightly viscous and cold to the touch).

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Empty the chilled rocks glass of ice water or remove from freezer. Place a single large clear ice cube in the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain and finish

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.

  6. 6

    Express orange oil

Hold the orange peel over the glass, skin side down about 3 inches above the drink. Give it a firm squeeze to express the oils across the surface, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink (or discard if you prefer a cleaner presentation).

  7. 7

    Garnish

Optionally, drop a Luxardo or maraschino cherry into the glass or skewer it and rest it on the rim.

  8. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately while cold. Sip slowly to appreciate the blended Scotch base rounded by sweet vermouth and amaro bitters.
