Method

Garnish & Glass Prep

  1. 1

    Rim the glass

Run the lime wedge around the rim of a rocks or coupe glass to moisten it. Spread the coarse salt or Tajín on a small plate and press the moistened rim into the salt to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.

Cocktail

  1. 2

    Juice & measure

If you haven't already, juice fresh blood oranges and limes. Measure 2 oz blood orange juice and 1 oz fresh lime juice into a shaker or mixing glass.

  2. 3

    Combine ingredients

Add 3 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz orange liqueur, and 0.5 oz agave syrup to the shaker with the juices.

  3. 4

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 5

    Strain & serve

Fill the prepared glass with fresh ice (optional). Double-strain the margarita into the glass using a cocktail strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer to remove pulp and ice shards. If you prefer it straight up, strain into the chilled rimmed glass without ice.

  5. 6

    Garnish

Garnish with a blood orange wheel or wedge on the rim. Serve immediately.

  6. 7

Tasting notes: adjust sweetness with additional agave syrup (0.25–0.5 oz) if the blood oranges are particularly tart. For a smoky variation, substitute 0.5–1 oz of the tequila with mezcal.
