Method
Preparing the Molten Center
- 1
Melt the Chocolate and Butter
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate and unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
Preparing the Cake Batter
- 2
Preheat Oven and Prepare Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch round cake pans with 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and dust with cocoa powder. This will help prevent sticking.
- 3
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- 4
Add Wet Ingredients
Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth. Gradually add the boiling water and mix until combined; the batter will be thin.
- 5
Combine with Molten Center
Gently fold in the melted chocolate and butter mixture into the cake batter until well incorporated.
Baking the Cake
- 6
Pour and Bake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- 7
Cool the Cakes
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Serving
- 8
Serve Warm
For the best molten effect, serve the cake warm. Slice carefully and enjoy the gooey chocolate center!
