Custard

Caramel

Method

Caramel

  1. 1

    Prepare the Caramel

In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves. Continue cooking without stirring until the mixture turns a golden amber color. Immediately pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting it to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.

Custard

  1. 2

    Blend the Custard Ingredients

In a blender, combine 4 eggs, 1 cup of sweetened condensed milk, 1 cup of evaporated milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 3

Pour the Custard into the Dish

Carefully pour the blended custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the baking dish.

  3. 4

    Bake the Flan

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan, adding hot water to the outer pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan dish. Bake for approximately 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  4. 5

    Cool and Serve

Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert it onto a serving plate to release the caramel.
