Method
Drink
- 1
Prepare Glass
Fill a highball or Collins glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup).
- 2
Add Grenadine
Pour 0.5 fl oz grenadine syrup directly into the glass over the ice. This will settle toward the bottom and create the signature layered look.
- 3
Add Orange Essence
Add 0.25 fl oz (about 1/2 tsp) fresh orange juice to the glass to provide a light orange essence. If you prefer a stronger orange note, use a thin peel twist expressed over the glass instead.
- 4
- 5
Optional Aromatic
If using, add 1 dash of Angostura bitters on top for a faint aromatic note (skip for children or if you want the traditional kid-friendly version). Bitters will float briefly and then partially disperse.
Garnish & Serve
- 6
Thread 1 maraschino cherry onto a cocktail pick or place it directly into the glass, and rest an orange slice or a thin orange twist on the rim.
- 7
Serve immediately with a straw. Encourage the drinker to stir if they prefer an evenly pink beverage; leaving it un-stirred produces the classic layered appearance.
