Scorpion Cocktail - Spirits & Liqueur

Method

Scorpion Cocktail - Prep & Mixing

  1. 1

    Chill glass

If desired, chill a large coupe, tiki bowl, or double old fashioned glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Add spirits and juices

In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz Cognac, 1 oz light rum, 1 oz amaretto, 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 2 oz fresh orange juice. If using orgeat for a more authentic tiki almond note, add 1/2 oz. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add 1/4 oz simple syrup.

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Add 6 ice cubes to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, until the shaker is cold and well-chilled.

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Dump the ice water from your chilled glass and fill the glass with crushed ice (about 1 cup) to create a frosty, slushy presentation typical of tiki-style Scorpion servings.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the shaken cocktail over the crushed ice. Use a fine strainer or hawthorne if you prefer less dilution and fewer small ice shards.

Scorpion Cocktail - Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

Garnish with an orange wheel or spiral and, if using, a sprig of fresh mint placed at the back of the glass. Optionally express an orange peel over the top to release oils for aroma.

  2. 7

Serve immediately with a short straw. Encourage the drinker to sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of cognac, rum and amaretto with bright citrus.
