Ginger Cosmic Cocktail

Simple Syrup (if making fresh)

Method

Ginger Cosmic Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare the ginger

Peel the 1-inch piece of fresh ginger with the edge of a spoon or a peeler. Finely grate the peeled ginger (about 1 teaspoon grated) or mince very finely. If you prefer a milder ginger flavor, muddle the grated ginger in the bottom of a shaker to release aromatics and juice, then strain out solids later through a fine mesh.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker (or a lidded jar), add the grated/muddled ginger, 4 oz cranberry juice, 1 oz freshly squeezed orange juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz simple syrup. Fill the shaker two-thirds full with ice.

  3. 3

    Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and properly diluted. This chills the drink and integrates the ginger flavor.

  4. 4

    Strain and finish

Double-strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or martini glass (or a rocks glass with fresh ice) using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh sieve to remove ginger bits. If you prefer a bit of effervescence, top with 1 oz sparkling water and gently stir once to combine.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist over the glass and bending it so the oils spray across the surface; drop the twist in or hang on the rim. Add a lime wheel or wedge on the rim if desired. Serve immediately.

Simple Syrup

  1. 6

Combine 0.25 cup granulated sugar and 0.25 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently over medium-low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Store any unused syrup in the refrigerator in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.
