Method
Coffee
Preheat and prepare machine
Turn on the espresso machine and allow it to fully heat. Flush the group head for about 5–10 seconds to clear and warm it (use approximately 30 ml of water). Also preheat the serving cup by filling it with hot water for 20–30 seconds, then discard the water.
Dose and tamp
Weigh 18 g of freshly ground espresso (medium-fine grind suitable for your machine) into the portafilter basket. Distribute the grounds evenly and tamp with consistent pressure to create a level puck.
Pull shot
Lock the portafilter into the group and start extraction immediately. Pull a double espresso shot of about 36–40 ml in 25–30 seconds. Aim for a steady flow and a slightly syrupy crema on top.
Assembly
Heat the 150 ml of water to 85–95°C (185–203°F). You can use a kettle. If your cup is still hot from preheating, pour out the water before adding the diluted Americano.
There are two common methods: 'long black' style (espresso on top) or Americano style (espresso first, then water). For a classic Americano, pour the freshly pulled espresso into the preheated cup, then gently add the 150 ml of hot water. Pour slowly to preserve crema if you prefer crema on top; pour more directly if you want it mixed.
