Method

Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, instant yeast, and sugar. Mix well. Gradually add lukewarm milk and melted butter, mixing until a rough dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Butter Layer

While the dough is rising, prepare the butter layer. Place the 1 cup of unsalted butter between two sheets of parchment paper and use a rolling pin to flatten it into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator until firm.

  4. 4

    Laminate the Dough

Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle about twice the size of the butter layer. Place the chilled butter in the center and fold the dough over the butter to encase it completely.

  5. 5

    Roll and Fold

Roll out the dough into a long rectangle, then fold it into thirds (like a letter). Repeat this process two more times, chilling the dough for 30 minutes between each roll and fold.

  6. 6

    Shape the Croissants

After the final fold, roll the dough into a large rectangle and cut it into triangles. Roll each triangle from the wide end to the tip to shape the croissants.

  7. 7

    Final Rise

Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another hour.

  8. 8

    Bake the Croissants

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the croissants for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and flaky.

  9. 9

    Cool and Serve

Allow the croissants to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving warm.
