Method
Base
- 1
Combine the creamy base
In a medium mixing bowl, add 1 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup cold buttermilk. Whisk until completely smooth and homogenous, about 30–45 seconds. Scrape the sides and base of the bowl with a spatula to incorporate everything.
- 2
Add acid and aromatics
Stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar. Add the minced fresh garlic (1 clove), 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce if using, and whisk to combine. The lemon and vinegar brighten the flavor and help balance the richness.
- 3
Season the base
Add 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder to the bowl. Whisk thoroughly and taste. If the dressing is too thick for your liking, whisk in up to 2 tablespoons cold water (start with 1 tablespoon) or additional buttermilk 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach a pourable but still creamy consistency.
Herbs & Seasonings
- 4
Fold in fresh herbs
Fold into the base 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives, 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley, and 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh dill. Mix gently but thoroughly so the herbs are evenly distributed. The fresh herbs should remain bright; avoid overworking.
- 5
Final seasoning check
Taste the ranch and adjust seasoning as needed: add more salt in 1/4 teaspoon increments, more pepper to taste, or another 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice if it needs brightness. If you added Worcestershire and it overpowered the flavor, balance with an extra tablespoon of sour cream or buttermilk.
Finish
- 6
Chill to meld flavors
Transfer the ranch to an airtight container or cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (preferably 1–2 hours) before serving. Chilling allows the garlic, herbs, and seasonings to marry and the flavor to mellow and deepen.
- 7
Serve and store
Serve chilled as a dip, dressing, or sauce. Store leftover ranch in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days; stir or whisk briefly before serving. If the ranch thickens in the fridge, thin with 1–2 teaspoons of buttermilk or water and re-whisk to desired consistency.
