Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Roux

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Stir continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a smooth paste.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 5 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce heat to low and add 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, 0.5 teaspoon of black pepper, 0.5 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 0.5 teaspoon of mustard powder. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combine and Bake

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce. Stir well to ensure all pasta is coated.

  2. 6

    Prepare Breadcrumb Topping

In a small bowl, mix 0.5 cups of breadcrumbs, 0.25 cups of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Stir until breadcrumbs are evenly coated.

  3. 7

    Bake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly on top. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve with Side

While the mac and cheese is baking, steam 2 cups of broccoli until tender. Serve the mac and cheese hot with a side of steamed broccoli.
