Pasta Preparation

Cook the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Cheese Sauce Preparation

Make the Roux
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Stir continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a smooth paste.

Add Milk
Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens and bubbles, about 5 minutes.

Combine and Bake

Combine Pasta and Sauce
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce. Stir well to ensure all pasta is coated.

Prepare Breadcrumb Topping
In a small bowl, mix 0.5 cups of breadcrumbs, 0.25 cups of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Stir until breadcrumbs are evenly coated.

Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly on top. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Serve with Side
While the mac and cheese is baking, steam 2 cups of broccoli until tender. Serve the mac and cheese hot with a side of steamed broccoli.
