Hotdog W/bacon & American Cheese Recipe

Prep buns and condiments

Bring buns and condiments to the counter so everything is ready. Spread about 1/4 tablespoon (roughly 1/2 teaspoon) softened butter evenly on the inside of each bun (top and bottom). Set buns aside on a plate.

When hot dogs and bacon are finished (see below), place a folded American cheese slice inside each warmed bun, then set a hot dog on top and wrap the bacon strip(s) around the hot dog. Add mustard, ketchup and relish as desired, then top with optional diced onion, peppers and a grind of black pepper.

Cook bacon

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the 4 bacon strips in a single layer (trim to fit if necessary). Cook, turning occasionally, until they are browned and crisp but not burnt, about 6–8 minutes. Transfer bacon to a paper towel–lined plate to drain. Reserve about 1 teaspoon of the bacon fat in the pan; discard the rest or save for another use.

Cook hot dogs

If you have reserved bacon fat, add 1 teaspoon vegetable oil to the skillet with the fat and warm over medium heat. Add the 4 hot dogs and cook, turning every 1–2 minutes, until the casings are browned and slightly blistered, 4–6 minutes total. If using a grill, preheat to medium-high and grill hot dogs 4–6 minutes, turning for even char.

Wrap bacon around hot dogs

While hot dogs are finishing, wrap one cooked bacon strip around each hot dog. Use a toothpick to secure the bacon seam if needed.

Melt cheese

Place the folded American cheese slice over the hot dog (on top of the bacon or inside the bun—your preference). To melt: (a) cover the skillet for 30–60 seconds until cheese softens and begins to melt, or (b) place assembled hot dogs under a broiler for 20–40 seconds on a lined baking sheet until cheese just melts. Watch closely to avoid burning.

Toast buns (optional but recommended): In a clean skillet over medium heat, place buttered buns cut side down and toast until golden brown and crisp, about 1–2 minutes. Alternatively, toast under the broiler for 20–30 seconds.

If using diced onion or sliced peppers, distribute them over the finished hot dogs along with a light grind of black pepper. Adjust condiments to taste.
