Bread & Spread

Optional Add-ons

Method

Bread & Spread

  1. 1

Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. The buttered sides will be the exterior that contacts the pan for toasting.

  2. 2

On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread the mustard evenly; if using mayonnaise, spread it on the unbuttered side of the other slice.

Fillings

  1. 3

Assemble cold sandwich (for simple cold serving)

Place the buttered-side-down slice of bread on a clean work surface. On the mustard-spread side, layer the ham evenly across the bread, folding slices if needed to cover edges. Top the ham with the two American cheese slices, then add lettuce and tomato slices if using. Season tomato with a light grind of black pepper if desired. Finish with pickle slices if using, then place the mayonnaise-spread bread slice on top, buttered side up.

  2. 4

Assemble & grill (for hot toasted sandwich)

If you prefer a hot, melty sandwich, place the mustard-spread bread (buttered side down) in a cold nonstick or cast-iron skillet. Layer the ham, then cheese, then optional tomato/lettuce (note: tomatoes can make a toasted sandwich soggy so add sparingly). Top with the other slice of bread, buttered side up.

Cook & Finish

  1. 5

    Toasting on stovetop

Heat the skillet over medium-low to medium heat. Cook the sandwich 3–4 minutes on the first side, checking after 2–3 minutes to ensure the bread is golden and not burning. Carefully flip the sandwich with a spatula and press gently; cook another 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden and the American cheese is melted.

  2. 6

    Alternative: Panini press or oven

If using a panini press, preheat and cook 3–5 minutes until golden and cheese is melted. In a 375°F (190°C) oven, place assembled sandwich on a baking sheet and bake 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway, until both sides are golden and cheese is melted.

  3. 7

    Rest & Serve

Remove the sandwich from heat and let it rest 1 minute to set. Transfer to a cutting board and slice in half diagonally or down the middle. Serve immediately while warm, or serve cold if prepared without toasting.
