Salad

Method

Salad

  1. 1

    Prepare lettuces

In a large salad bowl or on a wide platter, combine chopped romaine and iceberg lettuce; toss gently to mix and create an even bed for the Cobb components.

  2. 2

    Cook and chop bacon

If bacon is not cooked, cook 6 slices in a skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towels, then chop into 1/2-inch pieces.

  3. 3

    Hard-boil eggs

Place 4 eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water by 1 inch. Bring to a gentle boil, then cover, remove from heat and let stand 10 minutes. Transfer eggs to ice water for 5 minutes, peel, and quarter.

  4. 4

    Prep vegetables and cheeses

Halve cherry tomatoes. Thinly slice red onion. Cut American and provolone cheese into 1/2-inch strips. Dice avocados and toss gently with 1 tablespoon lemon juice to prevent browning (optional).

  5. 5

    Arrange Cobb components

On top of the bed of mixed lettuces, arrange the ingredients in rows or segments: place quartered eggs in one row, halved cherry tomatoes in another, sliced red onion in another, chopped bacon in another, diced avocado in another, and the American and provolone strips in separate rows. This classic presentation makes it easy to serve and keeps flavors distinct.

Dressing

  1. 6

Make the dressing by whisking together 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon minced garlic in a small bowl or jar. Season with 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (adjust to taste). Taste and adjust sweetness, acidity, or seasoning as needed. (Note: recipe lists 3 tsp salt and 1 tsp pepper in ingredients — use total salt and pepper to taste; start with smaller amounts and add as desired.)

  2. 7

If using a jar, close and shake vigorously until emulsified. If whisking, slowly drizzle oil while whisking to combine into a smooth dressing.

Finish / Serve

  1. 8

Drizzle the dressing evenly over the arranged Cobb salad or serve dressing on the side for guests. Gently toss if you prefer the salad combined, or let diners take portions keeping rows intact.

  2. 9

Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top as garnish. Serve immediately.
