Method

Sparkling Base

  1. 1

    Chill can or serving vessel

Place a 12 fl oz can or serving glass in the refrigerator for at least 1–2 hours so the beverage is very cold before serving. Sparkling water tastes best chilled.

  2. 2

If preparing at home from bottled carbonated water, pour 12 fl oz (approximately 355 ml) of carbonated water into a chilled 12 fl oz can-shaped or tall serving glass. Pour gently down the side to retain carbonation.

Flavoring (natural, light)

  1. 3

Add 1/2 teaspoon of real fruit juice (for example a few drops of grapefruit, lime, lemon, or other juice) or 1/2 tsp natural fruit essence to the chilled carbonated water. This is a very light flavoring—aim for a subtle hint rather than a sweetened drink.

  2. 4

If desired for extra aroma, add 1 drop of a complementary natural fruit oil or extract. Be cautious: a single drop is potent. Do not exceed 1 drop.

  3. 5

Gently stir once with a long spoon (one to two slow turns) to incorporate the flavor without losing excessive carbonation.

Finishing

  1. 6

Taste and adjust. If more flavor is desired, add up to an additional 1/4 teaspoon of juice or a second tiny drop of extract, stirring gently after each addition. Keep the drink light and unsweetened.

  2. 7

Serve immediately while cold and effervescent. Optionally garnish with a thin citrus wheel or a small sprig of mint, placing it on the rim or briefly into the drink.
