Method
Preparation
- 1
Chill glass
Place the martini or coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with the 0.5 cup ice and cold water to chill while you make the cocktail.
- 2
Brew and cool espresso
Brew a single-shot (about 1 oz) of hot espresso. Let it rest 20–30 seconds to cool slightly but remain warm enough to create crema. The espresso should not be piping hot when it hits the shaker.
Mixing
- 3
Combine ingredients
Add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.
- 4
Add ice and dry shake (optional for extra foam)
For a thicker, creamier foam, add no ice first and dry shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, then open and proceed to the next step. If you prefer quicker chilling, skip the dry shake.
- 5
Wet shake
Add the 1 cup of ice to the shaker (or if you already added ice earlier, ensure there is sufficient ice) and shake very hard for 12–18 seconds. Aim for a frothy, silky foam on top caused by the espresso crema and vigorous shaking.
Serving
- 6
Strain
Discard the chilling ice/water from the glass if used. Using a fine mesh strainer (double strain if desired) pour the cocktail into the chilled martini/coupe glass to capture small ice shards and ensure a smooth surface.
- 7
Garnish
Gently place 3 coffee beans in a triangle on the foam for aroma and presentation.
- 8
Serve immediately. The drink is best enjoyed right away while the foam is fresh.
