Old Fashioned Base
Citrus & Garnish
Ice
Optional Aromatic Finish
Method
Prepare Glass & Rinse (optional)
- 1
Rinse (optional)
If using an aromatic rinse, pour the small measure (≈0.1 oz) of high-proof spirit into the chilled rocks glass, swirl to coat the interior, then discard excess or pour out most so only a thin film remains. This step is optional but adds a bright aromatic lift.
Build & Stir
- 2
Place a mixing glass or large bar glass on your workspace. Add the simple syrup (0.25 oz) and Angostura bitters (3 dashes). If using orange bitters, add 1 dash now. Add the whiskey (2 oz).
- 3
Strain & Finish
- 4
Place one large ice cube in a chilled old-fashioned or rocks glass (or fill with 2–3 large cubes). Strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared glass over the large cube.
- 5
Express the oils from the orange peel by holding it with the outer skin facing down about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a firm twist so the oils spray over the cocktail. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel to transfer more aroma, then drop the peel into the drink (or rest it on the rim).
- 6
Garnish with one maraschino cherry if desired. Serve immediately.
