Lemonade Base

Garnish & Optional

Method

Lemonade Base

  1. 1

    Make Simple Syrup

Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium, stirring constantly until sugar completely dissolves and liquid is clear, about 3–4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature (about 10–15 minutes).

  2. 2

    Juice the Lemons

While the syrup cools, juice fresh lemons until you have 1 cup of lemon juice. Strain through a fine sieve into a measuring cup to remove seeds and excess pulp for a smoother lemonade.

  3. 3

    Combine

In a 2-quart pitcher, combine the cooled simple syrup, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, and 3 cups cold water. Stir well to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness or strength: add up to 1 more cup cold water if too strong, or up to 2 tablespoons lemon juice if too weak.

  4. 4

    Chill

Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to let flavors marry. If you need it immediately, add ice to individual glasses rather than the pitcher so the lemonade doesn’t become diluted.

Serve & Garnish

  1. 5

Fill glasses with ice cubes (about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup ice per glass). Pour chilled lemonade over ice, leaving room if you plan to top with club soda.

  2. 6

If you want a sparkling version, top each glass with about 2–3 ounces (roughly 1/4 cup) club soda and gently stir once.

  3. 7

Garnish each glass with a lemon slice and a mint sprig. Serve immediately.
