- 1
Heat water
Bring fresh water to a temperature of about 90–96°C (195–205°F). If using an electric kettle without temperature control, bring to a full boil and let sit 30 seconds.
- 2
Preheat cup
Pour the 2 tablespoons of room temperature water into your serving cup or mug, swirl to warm and rinse, then discard the water. This helps keep the Americano from cooling when you add the espresso.
- 3
Pull espresso
Using a properly dosed and tamped portafilter, pull two shots of espresso (about 60 ml total, depending on your machine). Aim for a 25–30 second extraction for a balanced flavor. Deliver the shots directly into your warmed cup.
- 4
Add hot water
Immediately pour about 6 fl oz (approximately 180 ml) of the hot water into the cup with the espresso. Pour gently to combine. If you prefer a stronger Americano, reduce hot water to 4–5 fl oz; for a milder, increase to 7–8 fl oz.
- 5
Stir and finish
Stir gently once to integrate crema and water. Taste and adjust.
