Shape the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches (3.5 cm) in diameter, placing them on a tray as you form.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working in batches, brown the meatballs on all sides, about 2β3 minutes per side. They should be well-browned but not cooked through. Transfer browned meatballs to a plate.

In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, water, oregano, and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer and cook about 5 minutes to blend flavors; season lightly with salt if needed.

Lower the heat to medium-low and return the meatballs to the sauce. Simmer, covered, for 25β30 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
