Pasta
Cheese Sauce
Topping (optional)
Method
Cooking the Pasta
Boil the Pasta
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.
Making the Cheese Sauce
Add Flour
Once the butter is melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it's a light golden color.
Add Milk
Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
Add Cheese and Seasoning
Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of paprika until smooth.
Combining
Mix Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated.
Optional Topping
In a small bowl, combine 1 cup of breadcrumbs, 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Mix well.
Top and Bake
Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Serving
Serve
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade mac and cheese!
