Pancake & Batter

Method

Pancake & Batter

  1. 1

    Make batter

In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and pinch of salt. In a separate small bowl or measuring cup whisk the milk, egg and melted butter until combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir gently until just combined; a few small lumps are fine. Do not overmix.

  2. 2

    Preheat griddle

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low to medium heat (about 325–350°F / 160–175°C). Lightly grease with the vegetable oil or an additional small pat of butter spread with a paper towel so the surface is evenly coated.

  3. 3

    Cook teddy bear shape

To form a teddy bear, pour batter in three rounds: one large circle (about 4 inches / 10 cm diameter) for the head and two smaller circles (about 1.5–2 inches / 4–5 cm) for the ears, placing the smaller circles touching the top of the larger circle so they appear attached. Cook until bubbles form on the surface and the edges look set, about 2–3 minutes. Flip carefully with a spatula and cook the second side until golden, about 1–2 minutes. Repeat to make one complete plate (you should get enough batter for 1 large head + 2 ears—if batter remains, make extra small pancakes). Keep pancakes warm on a plate in a low oven (200°F / 95°C) or covered.

Toppings & Face Details

  1. 4

    Assemble face

Place the large pancake on the plate and position the two smaller pancakes at the top to form ears. Use two berries for the eyes, one berry or a small slice of banana for the nose, and place chocolate chips as pupils and/or a smiling mouth. Slice a few banana rounds and arrange as cheeks or additional ear detail. Dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired. Drizzle syrup or honey over or alongside.

Protein Options (Choose one)

  1. 5

    Cook bacon

If serving bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook 2 bacon slices until crisp to your liking, turning occasionally, about 6–8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate. Arrange next to the pancake.

  2. 6

    Cook sausage

If serving sausage links: In the same or a separate skillet over medium heat, cook 2 breakfast sausage links, turning regularly, until browned and cooked through, about 8–10 minutes. Drain excess fat and place beside the pancake.

  3. 7

    Make scrambled egg

If serving the scrambled egg: Crack 1 egg into a small bowl. Add 1 tsp butter to a small nonstick skillet and melt over low–medium heat. Whisk the egg with 1/4 tsp salt and a pinch (1/8 tsp) black pepper. Pour into the skillet and gently stir with a spatula, cooking until soft curds form and the egg is just set, about 1–2 minutes. Fold off heat and serve on the plate next to the teddy bear pancake.
