Method

Filling Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the meat

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and ground pork and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add vegetables

Stir in the onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Season the filling

Add Cajun seasoning, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Mix well.

  4. 4

    Add broth

Pour in the beef broth and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool.

Crust Preparation

  1. 5

    Make the dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 6

    Add water

Gradually add water, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into 2 balls, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Assembly and Cooking

  1. 7

    Roll out the dough

On a floured surface, roll out one ball of dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 6-inch circles.

  2. 8

    Fill the pies

Place a tablespoon of the meat filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and crimp the edges to seal.

  3. 9

    Heat oil for frying

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat 2 cups of cooking oil over medium-high heat.

  4. 10

    Fry the meat pies

Once the oil is hot, carefully add the filled pies, frying in batches if necessary. Cook until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
