Method

Prepare the Pickles

  1. 1

    Slice the Pickles

Take the dill pickles and slice them into spears, ensuring they are about 1/4 inch thick.

Make the Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well blended.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until smooth. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Fry the Pickles

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Pickles

Dip each pickle spear into the batter, making sure to coat it completely.

  3. 6

    Fry the Pickles

Carefully place the coated pickle spears into the hot oil. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan, cooking for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serve

  1. 7

    Plate and Serve

Arrange the fried pickle spears on a serving plate and serve warm with ranch dressing for dipping.
