Dry Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, buttermilk, and boiling water until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Pour into Pans

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

  6. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting

  1. 8

    Prepare Frosting

In a mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until well blended.

  2. 9

    Add Milk and Vanilla

Add the milk and vanilla extract to the frosting mixture. Beat on medium speed until creamy and smooth.

  3. 10

    Frost the Cakes

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
