Chocolate Malt Shake Base

Method

Chocolate Malt Shake Base

  1. 1

    Prepare dry chocolate blend

In a small bowl, whisk together the chocolate malt powder, unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar until evenly combined. This ensures no lumps when blending.

  2. 2

    Measure liquids and ice cream

Add the whole milk, half-and-half (or cream) and vanilla ice cream to the jar of a high-speed blender. Using both milk and half-and-half gives a creamy mouthfeel while keeping the shake pourable.

  3. 3

    Add powders and syrups

Sprinkle the combined dry chocolate blend over the ice cream, then pour in 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup. Add the optional ice cubes if you want a thicker, colder shake.

  4. 4

    Blend to smooth

Secure the lid and blend on medium-high for 20–30 seconds, then stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula. Blend another 10–20 seconds until the mixture is smooth, thick and velvety. If too thick, add up to 2 tablespoons more milk and briefly pulse. If too thin, add a few more tablespoons of ice cream or an extra ice cube and blend again.

Triple Chocolate Components

  1. 5

Incorporate the second and third chocolates

With the blender running on the lowest setting, drizzle in the 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup used for blending to fully disperse chocolate flavor. Add the chocolate shavings and milk chocolate chips and pulse 2–3 short bursts (1–2 seconds each) so you keep small chocolate pieces throughout the shake without fully pulverizing them.

  2. 6

Taste and adjust: sample a small amount. If you want stronger malt or chocolate flavor, add another 1 teaspoon malt powder or 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup and pulse to combine.

Toppings & Garnish

  1. 7

    Prepare glass

Run a spoonful of chocolate syrup around the inside of a chilled tall glass for a decorative swirl.

  2. 8

    Pour and top

Pour the blended shake into the prepared glass, leaving space at the top for toppings. Pipe or spoon the whipped cream on top, then drizzle with the remaining chocolate syrup. Sprinkle the crushed malted milk balls or cookie crumbs and the chocolate shavings reserved for garnish. Finish with a maraschino cherry if using.

  3. 9

Serve immediately with a wide straw and a long spoon to enjoy the chocolate pieces.
