Espresso-Black Tea Base
- 1
Brew and combine
Brew 1.5 shots (about 45–50 ml) of fresh espresso. While the espresso brews, steep 3 oz of strong black tea (use 1 tea bag or 1 heaping teaspoon loose leaf per 6 oz, but steep for 3–4 minutes for strength) in 3–4 oz near-boiling water and strain. Measure 3 oz of the steeped tea and set aside. In a heatproof pitcher combine the hot espresso and 3 oz hot black tea. Add 2 oz hot water to adjust strength and temperature so the mixture is hot but not scalding (total hot liquid about 5–6 oz). Stir briefly to combine.
Sweetener & Flavoring
- 2
Sweeten and flavor
Add 3/4 tablespoon dark brown sugar simple syrup to the hot espresso-tea mixture and stir until fully dissolved. Add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. If you want the signature deep black color, whisk in 1/4 teaspoon food-grade activated charcoal or 1/4 teaspoon black cocoa powder until evenly suspended. Taste and adjust sweetness: add up to another 1/4 tablespoon syrup if desired.
Cream & Texture
- 3
Heat and froth milk
Combine 3 oz whole milk and 1/2 oz heavy cream in a small pitcher. Heat gently to about 140–150°F (60–65°C) — hot but not boiling — or warm on the stove until steam appears at the edges. Froth or vigorously whisk for 10–20 seconds to create a smooth microfoam; you want silky texture, not large bubbles. If serving iced, cool the milk and lightly shake to integrate instead of heating.
- 4
Assemble
Pour the hot espresso-black tea mixture into a pre-warmed 10–12 oz cup leaving room for milk. Slowly pour the frothed milk and cream over the back of a spoon into the cup to create a layered appearance and gentle crema. Stir once if you want a uniform color and taste. If serving cold, pour espresso-tea over ice and top with cold milk mixture and a light shake.
Garnish
- 5
Top with 2 tablespoons cold unsweetened whipped cream if using. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon ground espresso or finely grated dark chocolate over the top and finish with a small pinch of flaky sea salt to enhance flavor contrast. Serve immediately.
