Preparation

Cocktail

1. Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned (lowball) glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

2. Measure and combine

Add 2 oz Noah's Mill Bourbon, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup into a mixing glass or a separate mixing vessel.

3. Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice and stir gently for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled (about 20–25°F drop) and slightly diluted — you want silkiness without over-dilution.

4. Prepare glass and garnish

Discard the chilling ice/water from the old-fashioned glass and place a single large ice cube into it. Express the orange peel over the glass by holding it skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a quick squeeze to spray oils over the surface; then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass.

5. Strain and finish

Strain the stirred bourbon mixture over the large ice cube in the prepared glass. Add the 3 dashes of Angostura bitters to float or drop into the top if you prefer a more pronounced bitter note. If using, add a Luxardo cherry on a pick and rest it on the ice.

6. Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the rich, spicy, oily mouthfeel and the layered caramel, vanilla, and oak notes of Noah's Mill. Optionally, for a smokier aroma, use a smoked ice cube or briefly smoke the glass with a cloche and wood chip before straining.

Optional variations

7. For a slightly sweeter, more decadent Old Fashioned style: increase simple syrup to 0.5 oz and muddle the Luxardo cherry in the mixing glass before adding ice and stirring.

8. For a smoky aroma: prepare a smoked ice cube ahead of time or smoke the glass briefly with a smoking gun after chilling and before straining the cocktail.
