Classic Margarita

For Serving (per cocktail)

Method

Classic Margarita

  1. 1

    Prepare the glass

Choose a rocks or coupe glass. Rub the lime wedge around the rim of the glass to moisten it. Place the coarse salt or superfine sugar on a small plate and dip the moistened rim into it, twisting to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.

  2. 2

    Build and shake

In a cocktail shaker, add 6 ice cubes, 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz Cointreau (or triple sec), 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5 oz simple syrup or agave nectar. Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds (until the outside of the shaker is frosty).

  3. 3

    Strain and serve

Fill the prepared glass with 3–4 fresh ice cubes. Double-strain the cocktail into the glass (use a hawthorne strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer) to remove small ice shards and any pulp. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim.

  4. 4

    Optional adjustments

If you prefer a stronger drink, reduce simple syrup to 0.25 oz. For a sweeter profile, increase to 0.75–1 oz agave nectar. For a frozen version, combine the same liquid ingredients with 1 to 1.5 cups of crushed ice in a blender and blend until smooth; rim and garnish as above.

For Serving

  1. 5

Serve immediately while cold. Offer salt and sugar as rim options and note that all margaritas are made with 100% agave tequila. Recipe yields one cocktail.
