Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass add 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, 0.25 oz demerara syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with ice (about 6 medium cubes). Stir gently and consistently for 30–40 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — the mixing glass should frost on the outside.

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

If you chilled your serving glass with ice water, discard the water. Place a single large ice cube or sphere in the chilled rocks glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a fine Hawthorne or julep strainer, double-strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice cube to remove any tiny shards of ice.

  6. 6

    Express and garnish

Take an orange peel and hold it, skin side toward the drink about 3–4 inches above the glass. Give it a firm squeeze to express the oils, then rub the peel's rim around the glass and drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Present immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the layered spirit-forward flavors: warm bourbon, herbal-sweet vermouth, bittersweet amaro, and citrus notes from the curaçao and orange oil.
