Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass. Combine smoked salt on a small plate and dip the wet rim into the salt to coat lightly. Set the glass aside.

  2. 2

    Mix

Add the añejo tequila (2 oz), mezcal (0.5 oz), fresh lime juice (0.75 oz), agave syrup (0.5 oz), orange liqueur (0.25 oz), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into a shaker.

  3. 3

    Shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup), secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Strain

Add fresh ice to the prepared rocks glass (large cube or several smaller cubes). Double-strain the cocktail into the glass using a Hawthorne or fine strainer to remove small ice shards and any pulp.

  5. 5

    Finish

Express an orange twist over the cocktail by holding the twist over the glass and pinching so the oils spray onto the drink, then drop the twist into the glass. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the interplay of the aged tequila, smoky mezcal, citrus brightness, and subtle bitterness from the Angostura.
