Beef patties
Buns & cheese
Toppings (optional, kid-friendly)
Method
Beef patties
- 1
Form patties
Divide the 0.5 lb ground beef into two small portions (about 4 ounces each) if making two small kid-sized patties, or use whole 0.5 lb for a single slightly larger patty. Gently shape each portion into a round patty about 3–4 inches wide and roughly 1/2 inch thick. Do not overwork the meat. Make a shallow indentation about 1/4 inch deep in the center of each patty with your thumb to help prevent doming while cooking.
- 2
Season
Lightly sprinkle kosher salt (about 1/2 tsp per patty if making two) and black pepper evenly on both sides of each patty.
- 3
Cook patties
Heat a nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tsp vegetable oil and swirl to coat. Once shimmering, add the patties (do not overcrowd). Cook for 3 minutes undisturbed until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook for another 2–3 minutes for medium doneness (adjust 1–2 minutes more for well-done). For safety with kids, you can cook to well-done (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).
- 4
Add cheese
During the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place one slice of American cheese on each patty. Cover the pan with a lid or a large bowl to help the cheese melt quickly, about 30–45 seconds. Remove from heat and transfer patties to a plate and let rest 1–2 minutes.
Buns & assembly
- 5
Toast buns
- 6
- 7
Assemble burger
- 8
Place the cheese-topped patty on the bottom bun. Add optional kid-friendly toppings: 1 tbs ketchup or to taste, 1 tsp mayonnaise if desired, 2 pickle slices, and about 1/4 cup shredded lettuce. Top with the bun crown. Cut the burger in half if desired to make it easier for a child to hold and eat.
- 9
Serve
- 10
Serve immediately with a simple side like apple slices, carrot sticks, or small fries. Let the burger cool slightly so it’s safe for a child to eat.
