Begin by chilling a cocktail glass. You can do this by filling it with ice water and letting it sit while you prepare the drink.

Prepare the Glass

In a cocktail shaker, add the bourbon whiskey, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, and Angostura bitters. Fill the shaker with ice cubes.

Mix the Ingredients

Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to ensure all ingredients are well combined and chilled.

Shake the Mixture

Discard the ice water from the chilled cocktail glass. Using a fine mesh strainer, pour the mixture into the glass to remove any ice shards.

Strain into the Glass

Twist a piece of lemon peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it into the glass as a garnish. Serve immediately.

Cook the Grains

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 25-30 minutes. Check occasionally to ensure there is enough liquid; if necessary, add more water or broth.

Simmer the Mixture

After the cooking time, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for another 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the grains gently, ensuring they do not clump together.

Fluff the Grains

Season your four-grain mixture with salt, pepper, or your favorite herbs. Serve warm as a side dish or base for your main course.
