Measure and combine
Pour 1.5 oz bourbon and 0.5 oz Tennessee whiskey into a mixing glass or directly into a short tumbler. Add 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (if using).
Stir and chill
Add a handful of ice to the mixing glass (or the large ice cube to the tumbler). Using a bar spoon, stir gently for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (if using a mixing glass). If you mixed directly in the serving glass with a single large cube, stir 10–15 seconds to chill the whiskey without over-diluting.
Strain and serve
If you used a mixing glass, strain the cocktail into an old-fashioned glass over one large ice cube. If you mixed directly in the serving glass, leave the large ice cube in place.
Express the garnish
Hold an orange peel skin-side down over the drink and give it a quick twist to release the oils, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish.
Taste and adjust: taste the cocktail and, if desired, add another dash of bitters for complexity or an extra 0.125–0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer it slightly sweeter.
Equipment
Ice handling: use fresh, clean large ice cubes. If using a single large cube, place it in the glass before straining the mixed cocktail to minimize splashing and to help the drink chill uniformly.
