Dressing Base

Method

Dressing Base

  1. 1

    Combine the base

In a medium mixing bowl, add 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup buttermilk. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. Whisk vigorously until fully combined and smooth, scraping the sides of the bowl so there are no streaks.

  2. 2

    Check texture

If the mixture feels very thick, plan to thin it in the final step with a little cold water (optional). Set the base aside while you prepare herbs and seasonings.

Herbs & Seasoning

  1. 3

    Prepare herbs

Finely chop 2 tablespoons parsley and 2 tablespoons dill; mince 2 tablespoons chives. Use a sharp knife and chop as uniformly as possible so the dressing has even herb distribution.

  2. 4

    Add dry seasonings

Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper to the bowl with the dressing base.

  3. 5

    Fold in herbs

Add the chopped parsley, dill and chives to the bowl. Fold everything together with a silicone spatula or whisk until the herbs and seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the dressing.

  4. 6

    Taste and adjust

Taste a small spoonful and adjust seasoning if needed: add up to 1/4 teaspoon more salt or a little more lemon juice (1/2 tsp increments) to brighten. Mix again after any adjustments.

Optional

  1. 7

    Adjust consistency

If you want a thinner, pourable ranch (for salads), whisk in cold water 1 tablespoon at a time up to 2 tablespoons until you reach the desired consistency. For a thicker dip, skip the water.

  2. 8

    Chill to meld flavors

Cover the bowl or transfer the ranch to an airtight container and refrigerate at least 30 minutes (preferably 1–2 hours). Chilling lets the herbs hydrate and flavors meld.

  3. 9

    Serve and garnish

Before serving, give the ranch a final stir. Serve chilled. Optionally sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon smoked or sweet paprika on top for color and a subtle smoky note.

  4. 10

    Storage

Store leftover ranch in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir before each use; the dressing may thicken slightly after chilling—thin with a teaspoon of water if needed.
