Method

Batter

  1. 1

    Combine dry ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly mixed.

  2. 2

    Add wet ingredients

In a separate small bowl or measuring cup, beat the egg lightly with the milk and vanilla extract. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth and lump-free. The batter should be similar to pancake batter—thick enough to coat a cookie but still fluid. If it seems too thick, add up to 1–2 tablespoons of milk; if too thin, add 1 tablespoon of flour.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the oil

Pour about 4 cups of neutral oil into a heavy, deep skillet or a wide pot to a depth of about 1.5–2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C) on a candy/deep-fry thermometer. If you don't have a thermometer, test by dropping a small bit of batter into the oil — it should sizzle and rise slowly to the surface without browning immediately.

  2. 4

    Coat the Oreos

Working quickly but carefully, one at a time (or two at a time if your fryer is large), dip each Oreo into the batter, fully coating it. Use a fork or a slotted spoon to lift the cookie out and let excess batter drip off for 2–3 seconds so it doesn't drop large globs into the oil.

  3. 5

    Fry until golden

Gently lower the battered Oreo into the hot oil. Fry 2–4 cookies at a time depending on pot size (do not crowd). Fry each cookie for about 30–60 seconds total, turning once if needed, until the batter is puffed and golden brown. Times vary by oil temperature; watch closely and adjust heat to maintain ~350°F (175°C).

  4. 6

    Drain

Use a slotted spoon or spider to remove the fried Oreo and transfer to a wire rack set over a baking sheet or to a plate lined with paper towels to drain briefly. Repeat with remaining cookies, keeping finished Fried Oreos warm in a low oven (about 200°F / 95°C) if desired.

To serve

  1. 7

While still warm, dust the fried Oreos generously with the powdered sugar using a fine-mesh sieve or shaker so the sugar coats evenly. Serve immediately. Fried Oreos are best eaten warm — optional accompaniments: a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, or caramel for dipping.
