Instructions for French Onion Soup

- 2
Caramelize the Onions
Cook the onions, stirring frequently, for about 30-40 minutes until they are deeply caramelized and golden brown. Reduce heat if they start to burn.
- 3
Add Liquids and Seasonings
Pour in the dry white wine and scrape the bottom of the pot to deglaze. Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- 4
Simmer the Soup
Let the soup simmer for at least 30 minutes to meld the flavors. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- 5
Prepare the Croutons
While the soup simmers, slice the French baguette into thick rounds. Toast the slices in the oven until golden brown.
- 6
Assemble the Soup
Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a toasted crouton on top of each bowl and sprinkle generously with Gruyère and Parmesan cheese.
- 7
Broil the Soup
Place the bowls under the broiler for about 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Be careful not to burn.
- 8
Serve
Remove the soup from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your French Onion Soup!
