Pizza Base & Dough

Seasoning & Finishing

Method

Pizza Base & Dough

  1. 1

    Preheat and prepare dough

Preheat oven to 500°F (260°C). If using a pizza stone, place it on the middle rack and heat for 40–60 minutes. Lightly flour a work surface with the 2 tablespoons of flour. Stretch or roll the 1 lb dough into an extra-large round (about 16–18 inches), leaving a slightly thicker edge for the crust. Transfer the shaped dough to a pizza peel or an inverted baking sheet dusted with a little flour or cornmeal.

  2. 2

Brush the outer 1/2 inch of the dough gently with 2 teaspoons olive oil to help the crust brown and crisp.

Sauce & Cheese

  1. 3

    Sauce

Spread 1.5 cups pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving the oiled crust edge free. Use the back of a spoon to get a thin, even layer — about 1/4 inch thick at the center.

  2. 4

    Cheese

Evenly sprinkle 4 cups shredded mozzarella over the sauced surface, covering to the edge of the sauce. Lightly scatter 1/2 cup grated Parmesan atop the mozzarella for added flavor.

Toppings (choose 3)

  1. 5

    Select and arrange three toppings

Select any three toppings from the Ingredients section. Distribute them evenly across the pizza so each slice gets a balanced amount. Suggested combinations: pepperoni + mushrooms + green bell pepper; Italian sausage + red onion + black olives; pepperoni + sausage + basil (add basil after baking). For raw vegetables (mushrooms, peppers, onions), place them directly on top of the cheese. For cooked meats (sausage), crumble and scatter evenly. For delicate greens (fresh basil), wait until after baking to add.

Seasoning & Finishing

  1. 6

    Season

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional), 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper evenly over the assembled pizza.

  2. 7

    Bake

Slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake at 500°F (260°C) for 10–14 minutes, rotating halfway through, until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. Baking time will vary by oven and thickness of dough; watch for the crust color and cheese browning as indicators.

  3. 8

    Finish and serve

Remove pizza from oven and transfer to a cutting board. If using fresh basil, scatter leaves over the hot pizza now. Let rest 3–5 minutes to set. Slice into 8–10 large slices. Serve hot.
