Burrito Components

Toppings (optional)

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Rice

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of rice with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until rice is fully cooked. Fluff with a fork and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Protein

Choose your protein and prepare it accordingly. For grilled chicken, season and grill until cooked through. For ground beef, cook in a skillet over medium heat until browned. For tofu, sauté cubes in a pan with a little oil until golden. For shrimp, simply reheat pre-cooked shrimp in a skillet.

  3. 3

    Rinse the Beans

Open the can of black beans, pour into a colander, and rinse under cold water to remove excess sodium. Set aside.

Assembling the Burrito

  1. 4

    Warm the Tortillas

Heat the flour tortillas in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side, or until warm and pliable.

  2. 5

    Layer the Ingredients

On each tortilla, layer 1/2 cup of cooked rice, 1/4 cup of black beans, 1/4 cup of your chosen protein, 1/4 cup of shredded cheese, and 2 tablespoons of sour cream. Add salsa to taste.

  3. 6

    Add Optional Toppings

Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced avocado, and hot sauce as desired.

Wrapping the Burrito

  1. 7

    Wrap the Burrito

Fold the sides of the tortilla inward, then roll from the bottom up to enclose the filling. Ensure it’s tightly wrapped.

  2. 8

    Serve

Slice the burrito in half if desired and serve immediately with additional salsa or hot sauce on the side.
