Meat Sauce

Method

Preparing Meat Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Vegetables

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Preparing Cheese Mixture

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, salt, black pepper, and chopped parsley. Mix until well combined.

Assembling the Lasagna

  1. 5

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 6

    Layer Ingredients

In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 3 sheets of lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce and a third of the shredded mozzarella cheese.

  3. 7

    Repeat Layers

Repeat the layering process two more times: noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella.

  4. 8

    Top Layer

Finish with a final layer of noodles topped with remaining meat sauce and the rest of the mozzarella cheese.

Baking

  1. 9

    Cover and Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.

  2. 10

    Uncover and Brown

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

  3. 11

    Cool and Serve

Allow the lasagna to cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
