Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.

Bake the Cake

  1. 5

    Pour Batter

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

  2. 6

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to cooling racks.

Prepare the Molten Center

  1. 7

    Melt Chocolate and Butter

In a microwave or double boiler, melt the semi-sweet chocolate and unsalted butter together, stirring until smooth.

  2. 8

    Combine Ingredients

Remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Assemble the Cake

  1. 9

    Create Layer

Once the cakes are fully cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Pour the molten center mixture over the top.

  2. 10

    Top with Second Layer

Place the second cake layer on top of the molten center, pressing down gently to secure.

  3. 11

    Serve

Slice and serve warm for a gooey molten center, optionally with whipped cream or ice cream.
