Bread Ingredients
Method
Bread Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups), sugar (1 tbs), and active dry yeast (2 tsp). Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups), salt (1 tbs), and whole wheat flour (if making wheat bread, 1 cup). Mix well.
- 3
Combine Mixtures
Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the dry ingredients along with olive oil (2 tbs). Stir until a dough starts to form.
- 4
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.
- 5
First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 6
Shape the Dough
Once risen, punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf by flattening it slightly and rolling it tightly. Pinch the seams to seal.
- 7
- 8
Preheat Oven
While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 9
Bake the Bread
Once the dough has risen, bake it in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- 10
Cool and Serve
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
