Sandwich Components
Béchamel Sauce
Method
Preparing the Béchamel Sauce
- 1
- 2
Add Milk
Gradually whisk in 240 ml of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- 3
Season the Sauce
Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt, 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Stir well and remove from heat. Set aside.
Assembling the Sandwich
- 4
Butter the Bread
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. This will be the outer layer of the sandwich.
- 5
Layer the Ingredients
On the unbuttered side of four slices of bread, layer 2 slices of ham and a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
Grilling the Sandwich
- 6
Preheat the Pan
Heat a skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
- 7
Grill the Sandwiches
Place the sandwiches in the pan, cooking until golden brown on one side, about 3-4 minutes. Flip the sandwiches and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
- 8
Add Béchamel Sauce
Once both sides are golden brown, remove the sandwiches from the pan. Place them on a baking sheet and spoon the prepared béchamel sauce over the top. Sprinkle additional Gruyère cheese if desired.
Final Steps
- 9
Broil the Sandwiches
Place the baking sheet under a broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese on top is bubbly and golden.
- 10
Serve
Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, then cut in half and serve warm.
