Method
Margarita Base
- 1
Combine and Shake
In a cocktail shaker, add 6 oz blanco tequila, 1.5 oz orange liqueur, 1.5 oz fresh lime juice and 0.5 oz agave nectar. Fill the shaker with 1 cup of ice and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy.
Sangria Component
- 2
Mix Sangria Notes
In a separate mixing glass or small pitcher combine 6 oz red wine, 1 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz brandy and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Stir gently to integrate (about 8–10 seconds). Do not dilute with ice here; keep chilled if possible.
Assembly & Garnish
- 3
Prepare Glass
Run a lime wedge around the rim of a large rocks or coupe glass. Dip the rim into 1 tablespoon kosher or chili-lime salt to coat. Fill the glass with about 1 cup fresh ice.
- 4
Layering The Wave
Strain the margarita mixture (from shaker) into the prepared glass over the ice, filling the glass about two-thirds full. Slowly pour the sangria mixture over the back of a spoon held just above the margarita layer so it floats and creates a visual 'wave' (pour gently to create a layered effect). If the drink is large and there's room, you may use 1:1 ratio by volume or adjust to taste.
- 5
Finish & Garnish
Garnish with a lime wheel and an orange slice perched on the rim and an orange peel twist expressed over the top for aroma. Serve with a straw angled along the side so drinker can swirl the sangria into the margarita to taste.
