Classic Margarita

Method

Classic Margarita

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Pour the kosher salt onto a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each chilled rocks or coupe glass. Dip the rim into the salt, rotating to coat evenly. Set glasses aside.

  2. 2

    Mix cocktail

Add 2 oz reposado tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, 2/3 oz triple sec, 0.25 oz agave syrup, and 4 large ice cubes to a cocktail shaker. (Quantities are per serving; this recipe yields 3 servings — scale as needed.)

  3. 3

    Shake

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker becomes cold and slightly frosted.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared salt-rimmed glass over fresh ice (or serve neat in a coupe). Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge. Serve immediately.

  5. 5

    Notes on sweetness

Taste one serving and adjust agave syrup by 0.25 oz increments if you prefer sweeter or more tart cocktails.

Frozen Margarita (optional batch)

  1. 6

    Prepare glass

Rub a lime wedge around the rim of chilled margarita or rocks glasses and dip into the coarse salt to coat. Set aside in the freezer for a minute if desired.

  2. 7

    Blend

In a high-speed blender add 12 oz reposado tequila, 6 oz fresh lime juice, 4 oz triple sec, 1.5 oz agave syrup and 5 cups crushed ice. Blend on high for 20–30 seconds until smooth and slushy. Pause and scrape sides if necessary to achieve even texture.

  3. 8

    Adjust consistency

If mixture is too thin, add 1/2 cup more crushed ice and blend briefly. If too thick, add 1–2 tablespoons of cold water and pulse once or twice.

  4. 9

    Serve

Pour the frozen margarita into the prepared salt-rimmed glasses. Garnish with lime wheels and serve immediately with a straw.
