Cocktail Base

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a very cold drink, place the serving rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before building the cocktail.

  2. 2

If using a salted rim: rub a lime wedge around the outer edge of the glass, then dip the rim lightly into a shallow plate of fine sea salt. Set the glass aside.

  3. 3

Fill a cocktail shaker with fresh ice about three-quarters full.

  4. 4

Measure and pour 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.5 oz blanco tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 0.25 oz orange liqueur into the shaker.

  5. 5

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and the ingredients are well chilled and slightly diluted.

  6. 6

Discard the ice from the chilled serving glass (if used). Add one large clear ice cube to the glass.

  7. 7

Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice cube. Double-straining (using both the shaker’s strainer and a fine mesh) removes small shards of ice and any pulp for a clean presentation.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 8

Express the oils from a lime wheel by holding it over the drink and giving it a gentle squeeze and a quick twist, then drop the wheel or place a lime wedge on the rim.

  2. 9

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of aged tequila, bright lime, and gentle sweetness from the agave and orange liqueur.
