Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prep glass (optional smoked-salt rim)

If using smoked salt, pour the smoked salt onto a small plate. Rub the rim of a rocks glass with a lime wedge, then press the wet rim into the smoked salt to coat about half an inch. Fill the glass with ice for chilling and set aside.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.5 oz mezcal, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup (1:1), 0.25 oz orange curaçao, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and well-chilled, and the outside is frosted.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Discard the ice used to chill the prepared glass (if you chilled the glass) and add fresh serving ice (about 1/2 cup). Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over fresh ice using a Hawthorne or fine strainer to remove small ice chips and any pulp.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Garnish with a lime wheel on the rim or floated on top. Optionally express a lime peel over the drink to release oils before adding the wheel.

  6. 6

    Tasting notes

The 1800 balances the warmed, rounded character of reposado tequila with a hint of smoky mezcal and bright lime. Orange curaçao and agave syrup add sweetness and depth while bitters give subtle aromatic complexity.
