Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Cranberries

Begin by rinsing the fresh cranberries under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Discard any that are soft or damaged.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Cooking Liquid

In a large pot, combine the water and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Cranberries

Add the rinsed cranberries to the pot of sugar water. Stir in the orange zest and lemon juice. If using, add the cinnamon stick at this stage.

  2. 4

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce begins to thicken.

  3. 5

    Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, stir in chopped walnuts and dried cherries during the last few minutes of cooking for added texture and flavor.

Cooling and Serving

  1. 6

    Cool the Sauce

Once the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat. Allow it to cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

  2. 7

    Serve

Transfer the chilled cranberry sauce to a serving dish. It can be served alongside turkey or any holiday meal for a delicious side.
