Method
Preparation
- 1
Chill glass (optional)
Place the serving glass in the freezer for 10 minutes while you prepare the shake to keep it cold longer.
- 2
Measure and slightly soften the ice cream so it blends smoothly: remove ice cream from the freezer 2–3 minutes before blending if it's extremely hard.
Blending
- 3
- 4
Add flavor and sweetener
Add 1 teaspoon granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract to the blender. The sugar brightens flavor; omit if your ice cream is already very sweet.
- 5
Add optional chocolate swirl
If making a chocolate milkshake, add 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup to the blender and/or drizzle some inside the chilled glass for presentation.
- 6
Blend
Secure the blender lid and pulse 3 times to break up the ice cream, then blend on medium speed for 15–25 seconds until the mixture is smooth and homogenous but still thick. Do not overblend or the shake will become thin and foamy. If too thick to blend, add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until desired texture is reached.
Finish & Serve
- 7
Pour and garnish
Pour the milkshake into the chilled glass. Top with 2 tablespoons whipped cream, sprinkle 1 tablespoon crushed cookies or sprinkles over the cream, and finish with a maraschino cherry on top.
- 8
Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon. If preparing multiple servings, keep remaining milkshake in the blender jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 hour; re-stir gently before serving.
