Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1.75 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 0.75 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1.5 tsp of baking powder, 1.5 tsp of baking soda, and 1 tsp of salt. Whisk together until well mixed.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add 2 large eggs, 1 cup of whole milk, 0.5 cups of vegetable oil, and 2 tsp of vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed for about 2 minutes.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Carefully stir in 1 cup of boiling water into the batter. The batter will be thin.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cake

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 7

    Make the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat 1 cup of softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add 0.5 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder, followed by 3 cups of confectioners' sugar, alternating with 0.5 cups of whole milk. Mix until smooth and creamy. Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract.

  2. 8

    Frost the Cake

Once the cake is completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve with Ice Cream

Cut the chocolate cake into slices and serve each slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.
